Play Sessions /Toy-Lending Program The heart of Lekotek is its play sessions. In brightly decorated play rooms, one hears laughter as children are busy playing with toys and computers. With the touch of a switch, adapted toys produce movement and noises, giving youngsters with disabilities the opportunity to learn through play. Some toys are toys that would be found in any child's playroom. These toys, with instruction from Lekotek leaders, may not always be used in the typical manner but they are always used to produce fun and success. We select toys to meet the individual needs of each child and family and emphasize the creative use of toys and simple toy modifications.
Play sessions are for newborns through 8 year olds who have special needs (including developmental disabilities, developmental delay, and chronic health conditions). Sessions facilitate interactive play among family members. Parents, siblings, other family members, friends and a Lekotek leader all join in on the fun during a play session. Families leave with a bag of toys to borrow for the month. Play sessions take place once a month and last for an hour. Computer play is part of every play session. With and without special adaptations, the computer is one of our most versatile toys. Computers are a certainty in every child's future and their benefits for children with disabilities are limitless. Families participating in monthly play sessions are eligible for our computer loan program. When available, families take home a computer system equipped with specialized software and adapted input devices. Computers and software are matched to the child's needs.

Lekotek provides play sessions for infants and children and their parents in hospital settings as well as at Lekotek. Once a month a Lekotek leader visits children in their "home setting," which for many infants and children is the hospital environment. The Lekotek leader brings adapted toys as well as technology devices and software when the environment permits, to be "played" with during the month.
When the child is released from the hospital, Lekotek services
continue at Lekotek or in the home if the child is medically fragile and
cannot travel.
