Resources for Kids

Links to Web sites where you can learn about disabilities

Braille Bug
This kids' site from the American Foundation for the Blind teaches kids who can see about Braille.  It also encourages all kids to read.  There's a reading club, games and secret messages, and much more.

Disability Awareness Site for Youth
Read about famous people who have disabilities.  Find out about books on people with disabilities. Learn about Braille and American Sign Language.  Use the manual alphabet to answer some riddles in the Games Chamber!

Kids Click
Kids Click is a Web search just for kids!  It was created by librarians.  Click on one of the topics listed on the page.  Or type in the word you want to search for and click the Search button.

Kids' Health for Kids:  Kids Health Problems
Read about health problems that kids can have, like Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and spina bifida.  There's information about staying healthy, games to play, and lots more.

Kids' Quest on Disability and Health
This site is from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  It helps kids use the Web to learn about people with disabilities.  Kids can also learn about some issues related to participation in daily activities, health, and accessibility.  Kids choose a topic they want to investigate (for example, "can someone in a wheelchair be an athlete?" or "can a person who can't speak still tell jokes?") and then set out on a quest to learn all they can on the Web!

LD OnLine KidZone
Check out the pictures, poems, and stories done by kids with learning disabilities or ADHD.  Learn tips for school.  There's also a list of good books to read about kids with learning or attention problems.

Questions from Kids about Blindness
The National Federation of the Blind put together this list of questions kids ask about blindness.  Learn the answers to questions like "How does a blind person identify money?", "Where do blind children go to school?", and "How do blind people cook?"

Sibling Support Project
This site is for brothers and sisters of kids with disabilities.  Learn about Sibshops.  Join the SibKids listserv.  Find out about resources like books and movies on children with disabilities.

Zigawhat!
This site has lots of links to Web sites that can help kids learn about disabilities and connect with other kids who have disabilities.  You can also read tips about living with a disability, or find out where you can tell your own story.

Games on the Lekotek Web site

Most of these are simple games to help kids learn to use a computer mouse.  To play any of these games, just click on the link below.  When you're done playing a game, click on your browser's Back button to return to this page.

Eyes!
A pair of eyes follow the cursor everywhere as you move your mouse around the screen!

Eyes and Animals
Move the cursor to one of the animals and the eyes will go look at it!

Ball Drop
Click anywhere on the screen and the ball will drop from where you click.  Try dropping it from up high or from close to the bottom of the screen!

Tic Tac Toe
An old favorite!  Play against the computer to see if you can get three X's in a row.
