How do I get started?

Please call the Lekotek main office at 404-633-3430 to get your child started in Lekotek programs. No referrals are needed.

What ages of children does Lekotek serve?

Play sessions are for youngsters from birth to age 8 years. CompuPlay, Computer Club and LekoPals are for children 8 years and older.

Is my child too young to use a computer, iPad or tablet?

No child is too young to play. Infant stimulation of any kind is beneficial to a child's development. Toys will be chosen to meet the child's current needs, interests and abilities. Lekotek sees the benefits of technology for children as young as 9-12 months old.

My child is 9 years old. Can he still participate in Lekotek activities?

Yes. Children typically "graduate" from play sessions on their 9th birthday. From 8 through 15 they may then participate in our Computer Club. The Club is a group of kids with disabilities that meet at Lekotek for computer fun and pizza on Sunday. Children 15 and above can participate in LekoPals. LekoPals is a club for teens and young adults that meets on Sunday.

Do you have an age requirement before you will use a computer, iPad or tablet in the play session?

No. Simple cause and effect software accessible by using a single switch can be enjoyed at any age.

Is there a waiting list for children to receive services?

Yes, due to limited funds, we do have a waiting list for children to receive some of our services (e.g., play sessions). At times some sites may have a waiting list up to 3 months. However, while on the waiting list for play sessions, families are welcome to participate in family activities which include music, Happy Tails, play dates, Pumpkin Patch, Halloween Party, and Holiday Party.

If my child is extremely limited in his or her abilities, is Lekotek appropriate?

Absolutely! That's why we're here.

Can siblings participate?

Absolutely. Lekotek encourages families to include siblings in our play sessions. The play session can be both a fun filled and learning experience for the child with the disability as well as his or her brothers and sisters. Lekotek also offers Sibshops, a support group for siblings, ages 6 and above. Sibshops provide opportunities for siblings to interact with other brothers and sisters who share similar experiences..

How much do play sessions cost? Do I have to pay all at once?

The fee for play sessions is $250 per year. You can pay anyway that is comfortable for you. All at once, or a little at a time. Scholarships are available for families who cannot afford our fees.

Does a family see the same Lekotek Leader every time?

Yes, a family will have the same Lekotek leader each visit.

How often do families come in for play sessions?

Generally once a month for one hour. Play sessions are scheduled at the families' convenience.

How does the computer loan program work?

Lekotek periodically receives computer donations from individuals and companies as they upgrade their current systems. We then install appropriate software for a child's needs as well as various input devices if necessary. We generally require that a child participate in play sessions for 4 to 6 months before going on our waiting list for a system. This gives their Lekotek Leader time to assess the child's software/input needs. We charge a fee of $25 per system. We also loan input devices such as single switches, trackballs, touch windows and Intellikeys when available. Scholarships are available.

How does the iPad loan program work?

We require that a family participate in play sessions for 6 months before eligible for an iPad loan. This gives their Lekotek Leader time to assess appropriate apps to meet the child's needs. A deposit of $100 is required but refunded when the iPad is returned.

Does Medicaid or insurance cover the cost of Lekotek programs?

No they do not. However, arrangements can be made to pay at the families' convenience. Full and partial scholarships are also available. There are a few waivers, such as the NOW/COMP waiver that will pay Lekotek dues. If you have such a waiver you can ask your waiver holder.

How is Lekotek funded?

Lekotek is a non-profit organization. It is funded by donations and grants from companies and foundations as well as nominal fees to our families for services. Click here to learn how you can help us continue to provide programs for families.
