You’ve heard of a tropical vacation, an eco-vacation and a stay-cation, but a change-cation? What’s that all about? When the Nichols family packs its bags to head out on vacation to Hilton Head, South Carolina this summer, they will be bringing along a green sand bucket but it’s not for building sand castles. It’s for loose change – all to help Lekotek, a non-profit organization in Atlanta dedicated to helping children with disabilities. As Connor, Linda, Andrew and Claire Nichols cruise down I-75, at every pit stop for gasoline, breakfast, lunch and dinner the Nichols family will take the change they receive with every purchase and place it in the sand bucket. Their goal is to fill the bucket to the top with coins before their vacation ends. “It’s amazing how fast loose change adds up,” says Linda Nichols. “This change-cation is going to change the way we vacation. It will be tons of fun and help us introduce our children to the importance of giving back and helping others.” Not only that, but the “change-cation” will help the kids learn how to count... an added bonus. The family chose the Lekotek organization because they had seen first-hand the great work Lekotek does in the community. Connor’s nephew has a form of epilepsy and has experienced developmental delays. Lekotek has helped “Lil’ Moe,” as he is affectionately known, develop and grow at his own pace and accomplish amazing things. Across Atlanta, Lekotek is providing fun, educational programs for families. “Our service philosophy encompasses the whole family,” says Helene Prokesch, Lekotek’s Executive Director. “Children with disabilities face challenges interacting with family members and participating in school and community activities. That's why we're here – we facilitate successful inclusion in all aspects of life.” The Lekotek organization is hoping “change-cations” catch on across Atlanta. “When times are tough it’s easy to cut back on charitable contributions, but that’s when donations can make the biggest difference,” says Prokesch. “That’s when the true spirit of giving comes alive.” It’s easy to take your own change-cation. Grab a bucket, hit the road and have fun. Planning a stay-cation this summer? onsider combining your stay-cation with a change-cation. All it takes is a bucket and some loose change.
